Handsets needing updates to call E000 from all networks (17/12/2025)

Urgent firmware update required by 14 January 2026

If you've received an SMS or email from Telstra or ALDI Mobile about your device, and have been linked to this page, you will need to complete a firmware update before 14 January 2026 to avoid being blocked from the network.

The original date your device was intended to be blocked was 17 December 2025, but recently changed to 14 January 2026.

What's happening

When you dial triple zero (000), your device may use any available mobile network to connect the call. To ensure the reliability of emergency calling, mobile network providers are required to block devices that cannot make calls to triple zero using all Australian mobile networks.

Your device has been identified as unable to reliably connect to at least one Australian mobile network for emergency calls without a firmware update.

Action required to avoid network blocking

To prevent your device from being blocked, you must:

  1. Download and install the latest firmware update on your device
  2. Enable VoLTE in your phone settings
  3. Complete both steps before 14 January 2026

How to update your device firmware

The firmware update process varies by device manufacturer. Generally:

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi - firmware updates can be large
  2. Charge your device - ensure at least 50% battery
  3. Open Settings - find Software Update or System Update
  4. Check for updates - download and install all available updates
  5. Repeat - check multiple times until no updates remain
  6. Restart your device - complete the update process

Important: You may need to install multiple updates sequentially. Keep checking until your device confirms it's fully up to date.

Enable VoLTE in your settings

After updating your firmware, ensure VoLTE is enabled:

For Android:
Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Network > Advanced > VoLTE
(Note: Menu locations may vary by manufacturer)

For iPhone:
Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data > select 4G, VoLTE On

Enable automatic updates (recommended)

To prevent this happening again, enable automatic firmware updates in your device settings. Check your device manual for specific instructions.

What happens if I don't update my device?

If you don't complete the firmware update before 14 January 2026, your device will be permanently blocked from all network providers.

Once blocked, your device will not be able to:

  • Make or receive calls
  • Send or receive SMS
  • Use mobile data
  • Access the network in any way

Your ALDI Mobile service remains active

Important: Only your device is blocked, not your ALDI Mobile service.

If your device is blocked on 14 January 2026, you will need to move your ALDI Mobile SIM to a compatible device.

Your ALDI Mobile service remains active - only the device is blocked. This means:

  • Your ALDI Mobile account continues as normal
  • Your mobile number stays with you
  • Your plan, credit and data allowances are unaffected

To continue using your service, simply move your SIM card to a compatible device. Once inserted into a device that can make emergency calls to triple zero on all networks, your service will work immediately.

You do not need to contact us or make any changes to your account - just move your SIM to a compatible device and you're good to go.

What if my device can't be updated?

If your device manufacturer no longer provides firmware updates for your model, or if the update doesn't resolve the issue, you'll need to replace your device.

Your new device must have:

Essential features:

Where to get a replacement device:

As ALDI Mobile does not sell mobile phones, you'll need to purchase one outright from retailers. Many in-store and online retailers offer mobile phones, including low-cost options.

When selecting a replacement mobile phone, ensure it meets the essential features listed above. For specific recommendations, visit your local phone retailer with this list of requirements.

How do I know if my update worked?

After completing all firmware updates and enabling VoLTE:

  1. Your device should show "software up to date" in settings
  2. You may receive one final notification before our systems update
  3. You can disregard further messages once updates are complete

Note: The SMS compatibility checker (text '3G' to 3498) is no longer active. If you've received a direct SMS or email from Telstra or ALDI Mobile, your device is affected.

FAQs

Why am I only hearing about this now?
Following the 3G shutdown on 28 October 2024, ongoing network monitoring continues to verify emergency calling capability. Your device was recently identified during this ongoing verification process.

Is this related to the 3G shutdown?
This is separate from the 3G shutdown. Your device has 4G capability but needs updated firmware to meet emergency calling requirements across all available networks.

Can I still call triple zero today?
Yes, your device should be able to make emergency calls on some networks. However, it cannot reliably connect to all available mobile networks for emergency calls, which is required by law.

I've already updated my device, why am I still getting messages?
Our systems update weekly. You may receive one more notification after completing your update. Disregard further messages once you've confirmed all updates are installed.

My device says it's already up to date
If you're still receiving notifications but your device says it's up to date, contact your device manufacturer or consider replacing your device with a compatible model.

Important information

This action is required under the Telecommunications (Emergency Call Service) Determination 2019. All Australian mobile network operators must block devices from their networks that cannot access emergency call services through all available networks.
