What's happening

When you dial triple zero (000), your device may use any available mobile network to connect the call. To ensure the reliability of emergency calling, mobile network providers are required to block devices that cannot make calls to triple zero using all Australian mobile networks.

If you've received an SMS or email from ALDI Mobile linking you to this page, your device has been identified as unable to reliably connect to at least one Australian mobile network for emergency calls.

Action required to avoid network blocking;

  • If your device needs a firmware update: complete the update and enable VoLTE before the deadline in your SMS or email.
  • If your device cannot be updated: replace your device before the deadline in your SMS or email. No firmware update or settings change can fix this issue.

If your device needs a firmware update

To prevent it from being blocked, install the latest firmware update and enable VoLTE before the deadline in your SMS or email.

Update your device

The firmware update process varies by device manufacturer. Generally:

  • Connect to Wi‑Fi – firmware updates can be large
  • Charge your device – ensure at least 50% battery
  • Open Settings – find Software Update or System Update
  • Check for updates – download and install all available updates
  • Repeat – check multiple times until no updates remain
  • Restart your device – complete the update process

Important: You may need to install multiple updates sequentially. Keep checking until your device confirms it's fully up to date.

Enable VoLTE

After updating your firmware, ensure VoLTE is enabled.

For Android:

Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Network > Advanced > VoLTE

Menu locations may vary by manufacturer.

For iPhone:

Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Voice & Data > select 4G, VoLTE On

Enable automatic updates recommended:

To help prevent this happening again, enable automatic firmware updates in your device settings. Check your device manual for specific instructions.

If your device is blocked

If you don't complete the required steps before the deadline in your SMS or email, your device will be permanently blocked from all network providers.

Once blocked, your device will not be able to:

  • Make or receive calls
  • Send or receive SMS
  • Use mobile data
  • Access the mobile network in any way.

Your ALDI Mobile service remains active. Only your device is blocked.

Your ALDI Mobile account, mobile number, plan, credit and data allowances are unaffected by device blocking.

To continue using your service, simply insert your ALDI Mobile SIM card into a compatible device.

If you are using an eSIM, contact us to provide you with a new eSIM activation code to use with a compatible device.

If your device must be replaced

Your device has a hardware limitation. To prevent it from being blocked, replace it with a compatible device before the deadline in your SMS or email.

What you need in a replacement device

Your new device must have:

Essential features:

  • 4G for data
  • VoLTE (Voice over LTE) capability
  • Emergency calling over 4G VoLTE
  • Compatibility with ALDI Mobile network bands (particularly Band 28)

Where to get a replacement device?

ALDI Mobile do not sell mobile phones, so you’ll need to purchase one outright from a retailer.

You can buy a replacement device from:

  • Local mobile phone retailers
  • Major electronics retailers
  • Online retailers, including low-cost options

When choosing a replacement device, ensure that it has all the essential features listed here.

Can I still use my old device after blocking?

Your blocked device can still:

  • Connect to Wi‑Fi for internet access
  • Use apps that don't require mobile network

Your blocked device cannot:

  • Make or receive calls (including emergency calls to triple zero (000)
  • Send or receive SMS
  • Use mobile data
  • Make calls over Wi‑Fi

FAQs

Why am I only hearing about this now?

Following the 3G shutdown on 28 October 2024, ongoing network monitoring continues to verify emergency calling capability across all available networks. Your device was recently identified during this ongoing verification process.

Depending on your device model, it may need a firmware update or replacement to meet emergency calling requirements.

Is this related to the 3G shutdown?

This is separate from the 3G shutdown. Your device has 4G capability, but cannot reliably connect to all available mobile networks for emergency calls.

Depending on your device model, this may be fixed by installing the latest firmware update and enabling VoLTE. Some devices have a hardware limitation and need to be replaced.

Can I still call triple zero (000) today?

Yes, your device should be able to make emergency calls on some networks. However, it cannot reliably connect to all available mobile networks for emergency calls, which is required by law.

Why can’t my device be fixed with an update?

Some devices have a hardware limitation that cannot be fixed with a firmware update or settings change. If your SMS or email says your device needs to be replaced, you will need to replace it before the deadline in your message.

If your SMS or email says a firmware update is required, install all available updates and enable VoLTE in your phone settings.

My device says it’s already up to date. What should I do?

If your device says it is up to date but you have received a message saying a firmware update is required, check for updates again. You may need to install multiple updates sequentially.

If no further updates are available, contact your device manufacturer. If the issue cannot be resolved, you may need to replace your device with a compatible model.

I’ve updated or replaced my device. What am I still getting device blocking messages?

Our systems update weekly. You may receive one more notification after completing the required action or moving your SIM to a new device.

Once you have confirmed all available updates are installed and VoLTE is enabled, or your new device is working, you can disregard further messages.

What if I can’t replace my device?

Many retailers offer low-cost, compatible devices.

If you are unable to obtain a compatible device, please contact us to discuss your situation. We may be able to assist customers in vulnerable circumstances.

What if I can’t update my device?

If you are having issues with updating your device, refer to your device manual or contact your device manufacturer.

My device still works fine. Why do I need to take action?

Your device may still work for regular calls and data on some networks. However, it does not meet the legal requirement to connect emergency calls to triple zero across all available mobile networks.

If your mobile network is not available, your device must be able to camp-on any other available mobile network when making a triple zero (000)
